Out of Texas For a Lil Bit
It’s the border that gets you.
One minute life has continuity,
The next it shifts.
Not that you would notice.
Except there are signs,
There always are.
This one says,
“Welcome to Colorado.”
The finest sight in years,
Terrifying in its application.
Tracing the border carefully,
It is subtle as a lie.
How do they keep these things straight?
Both sides identical,
Yet the distinction looms.
Laws and norms twist,
Possibilities morph but stand solid.
You step from one reality to the next,
Out of Texas for a little bit,
Yet spitting distance remains.
I always wanted to spit at Texas.
