Happy birthday America!
It was a painful labor,
Columbia wept and despaired,
But here you are,
Shattered and yet intact.
Much lauded as the greatest of all,
The leaders stagger round,
Snidely cynical and self-righteous,
Driving this cart at breakneck speed,
Smug and secure with relaxed spines,
Lashing that darkness toward the brink,
With our necks on the block,
And the future already on a ventilator.
Never mind tomorrow my fellow Americans!
Sing your anthems and drink another Lone Star,
Lighting fuses with a battered Bic,
Emblazoned with the flag and eagle,
And sending sparklers into the sky.
A clap like thunder,
Applause of the downtrodden,
Bread, circuses, and explosives.
